Neighborhood Safety
Safe zones (where you'll be)
- El Poblado (Medellín): The safest neighborhood. Gated buildings, police presence, tourist-friendly. Walk freely day and night on main streets.
- Laureles (Medellín): Residential, safe, well-lit. Slightly less touristy than Poblado — but equally safe.
- Usaquén (Bogotá): Upscale, walkable, heavily patrolled. Restaurants and shops open late.
- Walled City (Cartagena): UNESCO-protected historic center. Police and tourism security throughout.
Practical Safety Rules
- Use Uber, not street taxis: Uber (and InDriver) are safe, tracked, and dramatically cheaper than taxis. A 20-minute ride: $2–$4.
- Keep your phone in your pocket: The most common petty crime is phone snatching from hands on busy sidewalks. Use your phone inside shops and restaurants.
- Don't flash jewelry or expensive watches: This applies in any major city worldwide. Leave the Rolex at home.
- Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas: Stick to main streets and well-lit zones after dark. Uber is cheap enough for every nighttime trip.
- Use hotel/recovery house safes: Store passport, extra cash, and valuables in the room safe. Carry a photocopy of your passport, not the original.
State Department Context
The US State Department rates Colombia as Level 2: "Exercise Increased Caution." For context, this is the same rating as the UK, France, Germany, and Mexico. It reflects risks in specific rural regions — not in Medellín, Bogotá, or Cartagena, which have invested billions in security infrastructure over the past two decades.
15,000+ Americans did this last year
An estimated 15,000+ Americans chose Colombia for medical procedures in 2025. The medical tourism infrastructure — clinics, recovery houses, coordinators, hospitals — exists specifically to ensure international patients have safe, comfortable experiences. Your concierge knows the safe routes, trusted drivers, and reputable establishments. You're not navigating alone.
