Recovery Phase 1: Clear Liquids (Day 0–1)
Immediately post-anesthesia, your stomach needs gentle reintroduction:
- Agua de panela: Colombia's signature — sugarcane water, served warm with lime. Natural electrolytes, gentle on the stomach. Available everywhere.
- Herbal teas: Manzanilla (chamomile), hierbabuena (spearmint) — soothing, anti-nausea.
- Coconut water: Natural electrolyte replacement. Sold fresh from street vendors for $0.50–$1.
Recovery Phase 2: Soft Foods (Day 1–3)
- Caldo de costilla: Beef rib bone broth — Colombia's traditional healing food. Rich in collagen, glycine, and minerals. Every restaurant and recovery house serves this. Order it daily.
- Changua: Bogotá's milk-and-egg broth soup. Protein-rich, easy to digest.
- Fresh fruit smoothies: Papaya (anti-inflammatory enzyme papain), guanábana (soursop — immune support), mango, passion fruit. Blended with water or milk. Available at any juice shop for $1–$2.
- Scrambled eggs (huevos pericos): Soft eggs with tomato and scallion. Gentle protein.
Recovery Phase 3: Full Nutrition (Day 3+)
- Grilled chicken: Available everywhere, often with rice and beans (protein + complex carbs).
- Trucha (mountain trout): Medellín specialty — fresh, light, omega-3 rich.
- Lentil soup (sopa de lentejas): Iron and protein for blood rebuilding after surgery.
- Avocado: Enormous, creamy Colombian avocados for healthy fats. $0.50–$1 each.
- Arepas con queso: Cornmeal cakes with cheese — soft, warm, comforting.
What to Avoid
- Alcohol: Zero alcohol for at least 2 weeks (interferes with healing, interacts with medications).
- Excessive sodium: Increases swelling. Colombian food can be salt-heavy — ask for "menos sal" (less salt).
- Spicy food: Irritates the digestive system during medication recovery. Ají (Colombian hot sauce) can wait.
- Raw street food: Stick to restaurants and known vendors during immune-compromised recovery days.
Rappi — your recovery lifeline
Rappi (Colombia's DoorDash) delivers restaurant meals, groceries, and pharmacy items to your door — usually within 20–40 minutes. Download the app, add a Colombian payment method or use the pay-in-cash option, and you have access to hundreds of restaurants and every supermarket chain without leaving your recovery bed. This is not a luxury — it's essential for Day 1–3.
Recovery house meals
Most recovery houses include 3 meals/day prepared by on-site cooks, tailored to post-surgical dietary requirements. This is one of the strongest arguments for choosing a recovery house over an Airbnb — nutritionally appropriate meals without the cognitive load of ordering or preparing food when you're in pain and on medication.
Recovery Fuel Included
Your medical vacation includes world-class food — whether chef-prepared at a recovery house or delivered from Medellín's best restaurants.
